This is defined as an abnormal retention of fecal matter, a delay in bowel evacuation as
compared to the patients’ previously normal bowel habits, or stools are abnormally hard,
less in quantity, or relatively less frequent. When a person has infrequent or hard stools
or has to exert considerable efforts while passing stool, he may be said to have
constipation.
Normal bowel movements may vary from 3 per day to 3 per week.
Bowel movements may vary for each individual and across cultures depending on the intake of fiber in the diet.
Causes:
Constipation may be due to various physiological is psychological conditions.
Poor diet & dehydration
Poor bowl habits
Fissures and hemorrhoids (Piles)
Inadequate physical activity
Hormonal changes as during pregnancy
Anxiety depression & other emotional stress
Medications side effects (pain relief, anti-depression medicine)
Laxative dependence (excessive laxative use)
ODS (A type of chronic constipation)

Self-Assessment can help in diagnosis. Must include 2 or more of the following.
Straining during at least 25% of defecations
Hard stools in at least 25% of defecations
Sensation of incomplete evacuation for at least 25% of defecation
Manual maneuvers to facilitate eat least 25% of defecations (e.g digital
evacuation)
Fewer than 3 defecations per week.
Complication of constipation:
Hemorrhoids (Piles) & Anal Fissure
Fecal impaction
Bowel Obstruction
Bowel Perforation
Electrolyte imbalance
Increase incidence of Colon & Rectal cancer
Staining results in se Systemic blood pressure
Anal Fissure
Management
Obstructive defecation is a surprisingly common symptom particularly amongst females.
These patients can often be difficult to assess as they may well have a mixed pattern of
symptoms and some may have co-existing fecal incontinence.
STARR Surgery:
A treatment for chronic constipation. Stapled Trans Anal Resection of
the Rectum (STARR) for the Obstructed Defaecation Syndrome (ODS) is the treatment of
choice.
